Our adventure with our partners in Spain. Awareness of water consumption is on track. The ideas are many. We share our work that will allow us to move to new learning activities. We compete to Statt which was also a great incentive.

Hydration

This survey is part of etwinning project  on healthy eating in which three schools participate:

  1. IES DAVIÑA REY (Monforte de Lemos-Galicia-Spain)
  2. ESSA SANTO ANDRE DE BARREIRO (Barreiro-Portugal)
  3. IES REALEJOS (Tenerife-Canarias-Spain)

And other European centers are involved through the blog of external collaborations
For its distribution, shared forms of google drive have been developed in which the questions whose treatment is also shared have been turned over.
The following presentation shows the results of one of the questions, number six, in which data are taken on the daily consumption of liquids of the respondents with respect to a classification in eight categories:
  1. Water
  2. Dairy and soy drinks
  3. Natural fruit and vegetable juices 100%
  4. Packaged soft drinks and juices (colas ...)
  5. Coffee, tea
  6. Isotonic drinks
  7. Energy drinks
  8. Drinks with alcohol

PUPILS’ NUTRITION TEST: Do I eat healthy food?

Nutrition is one of the most necessary child's normal growth, for further development of physical and mental conditions. Students made a test based on diet. Filled the questionnaire table, marked what do they eat and drink. That particular week ate ordinary food, didn’t change their eating habits, and  no attempt in the week to lose or gain weight while eating sweets as usual.

Results:


Water and unsweetened fruit tea every day consumes almost 80% of pupils. An average amount of fluid taken is 1,100 ml per day, in addition while playing sports students drink about one litre of water. Although drinks with sweeteners are not advisable, but half of the respondents like to take 4 - 7 times a week. Half of the surveyed students drink compotes and other sugary soft drinks from one to three times a week. Coca Cola drinking habits: 18% - do not drink at all, 50% - 2-3 times a week and only one student (6.3%) drink every day. Coffee, black or green tea less than seven times a week consume 81.2% of the students.
56.2% of pupils eat bread, cakes, cereals, pasta, rice and cereal-based products every day. Only one-third (31.2%) of pupils consume vegetables, green salad or vegetable juice each day, and 12.5% of students  do not like to eat vegetables at all.  63% of the respondents enjoys eating fresh fruits and berries every day.
It is recommended to eat dairy products (milk, kefir, yoghurt, cheese, cottage cheese) every day, but in moderation. 44% of pupils eat four - seven times a week.
37.5% of the students eat one egg  and one-third - three eggs a week.
Almost all the students eat meat, poultry, sausages. 68.7%  of pupils eat such food every day. Only 12.5% of respondents eat fish, fish fingers, herring, four times a week. A quarter of the surveyed students eat butter, margarine and mayonnaise four times a week. 
It is recommended to eat about 5 tablespoons of cold pressed oil per week. 25% of respondents ate two tablespoons of cold-pressed oil per week , and half of the respondents stated that they  have never eaten this product. 
Most students (that is 70%) had fried potatoes and potato chips  two or more times a week. Only one-third of the students succeed to eat these products once a week. It is recommended to eat quickly prepared food, for example., pizza, kabob, hot sandwich, hot dog, sausage, white bread only once a week. 43.7% of the surveyed students eat junk food  three or more times per week. 
Half of the surveyed students eat cereal, dried cake, ice cream three or more times a week.

Conclusions:

  1. Water and unsweetened fruit tea drink 80% of pupils every day. Per day and while playing sports an average amount of fluid is 1,100 ml.
  2. Although drinks with sweeteners like Coca-Cola is not advisable, half of the surveyed students  like to take drinks with sweeteners 4 - 7 times, and Coca-Cola - 2 - 3 times a week.
  3. The 56.2% of pupils eat carbohydrate-rich food every day.
  4. Only one-third of respondents eat vegetables every day, while fruits and berries - 63% of respondents.
  5. The 44% of students eat dairy products four - seven times a week.
  6. Students eat enough or too much meat and  not enough fish.
  7. Students consume too much butter, margarine, mayonnaise, on the other hand they eat too little cold-pressed oil. Half of the respondents stated that they are not used to eat this product at home.
  8. The majority of respondents are in excess of the recommended rate, while eating baked potatoes and potato chips, and only a third of them eat such food once a week.
  9. Quickly prepared food dominates in  the menu of 43.7%  surveyed students. Eating too many sweets or snacks  like more than half of the surveyed students.

Sharing Statistics with Lithuania

Secondary school students begin their study of the results of the hydration survey. They share the first tables summarizing their graphs with Lithuanian mates of "Saltinio" progymnasium Taurage,
Next week they will do the same with the collaborators of the neighboring country, Portugal.

Eating habits in our kindergarten

From Lithuania, the teacher Ruta Kersiene tells us about her eating habits in your kindergarten (Jonavos lopselis-darzelis "Saulute", Lithuania):

- Your breakfast habits: food you usually have and the amounts of them.
For breakfast kids usually eat different porridge (150 g. for smaller kids and 200g. for 4-7 years old kids): oatmeal, semolina, buckwheat, pearl barley , boiled eggs and corn flakes with milk. Sometimes they get biscuits (simple ones, not very sweet - 12 g.), small buns (30 g.). Kids drink herbal tea, cacao or black tea with milk - 150 gr. for under 4 years old and 200 g for over 4 years kids.
-Your hydration habits.
All kids can drink water during the day as often as they want, since they have a jar of water in every single group. Children also get 150-200 g. water with slices of lemon without sugar, apple juice or stewed fruit compote once a week.
- Your food pyramid.


We have read your diet and found it very healthy and healthy, with many grains.
It strikes us that they drink tea, since we do not have that custom here, is an interesting idea.They are very kind to share this information with us. Thanks to our Lithuanian friends.

Ukrainian cuisine

The kindergarten ukraine “Educational Complex Vseznaiko” has  already involved some interdisciplinary projects to improve the standards of Ukrainian education.
At this moment they  develop a project called "Winter holidays and traditions in Ukraine"
They were interested in the theme of winter, winter holidays and traditions in Ukraine, also they learned about the seasonal dishes of Ukrainian cuisine, from the point of view of healthy nutrition.
That is why they have kindly offered to share with us their learning about the food of their country.
They send us this kind message with a presentation of their work:

Dominican Republic's Food habits

We dominicans usually eat three food during the day.
For breakfast, we could have bread with butter and a cup of coffee or chocolate, or boiled smash banana with boil or fried egg, or cheese or even ham.
Our main food is the rice, beans and meat, it is eaten every singles day by most dominican, sancocho that is a Kind of soup with meat and vegetables, vegetables and fruit are not as popular as the rice. Most of us never eat properly, or have the right amount of food. Also, most people usually have water or juice while are eating, and right after Lunch a cup of coffee is welcomed.
For dinner, it depends on the Day and the Kind of family, it could be pasta, boiled plantain with salami, mash potatoes or bananas, pizza or fried chicken with fríes.
Water, i think we drink the right amount of water per day.

Sharing projects

Ninfa Laurenzo Early Childhood Center is a Houston Independent School District facility located just south of downtown.
Students attending Laurenzo ECC enjoy a variety of educational experiences from specially trained Early Childhood teachers.  The school is named after a well known Hispanic Houston Icon, Ninfa Rodriguez Laurenzo, who was also known as Mama Ninfa.


Ninfa Laurenzo ECC school is doing their StarT project about peace, hope and well being. The project is called the 1000 paper cranes. They are spreading love and peace by making and spreading out paper cranes. They aim to build bridges between different communities and erase borders, support refugees and enhance Human values. The person in charge of the project at the school is Francisco Usero Gonzalez.

We have contacted them to share tasks. Our students have made paper cranes and their students show us how they learn healthy cooking.
Children give examples by washing the vegetable and picking up the table.
We are very happy to be able to collaborate and have found a school with Hispanic ties.







The three schools congratulate the students and teachers of Laurenzo ECC and we thank them for their collaboration.

We are trying to answer this question properly through a drinking and hydration habits survey. In the picture you can see our students doing the survey to their peers using tablets. So far, we have only collected the data and in a few weeks we will have enough information to know more about us and we will be ready to make a new question:

Food pyramid of lithuania

The Lithuanian teacher, Lina Dovydiene, has shared with us the work of her students and their families. This is his story ...

We are from Lithuania. I and my colleagues work in the kindergarden "Vaidilute" in Kaunas. We are talking about health and healthy habits every day.
Our kids with their parents did food pyramids. They were talking about heathy habits while they were working. It is a very good idea to work and talk together. One girl with her mum knitted food pyramid. We are proud of our children and parents in our kindergarden Vaidilute.






The work of these children and their families seems excellent, we are very grateful that they send us their photos for our project and we send them a loving greeting from Spain and also on behalf of our partners in portugal.

What is it


StarT is an initiative on collaborative teaching by the Finnish government that promotes interdisciplinary project-based and phenomenon-based learning – it puts science and technology into a context that is relevant for students and makes learning both exciting and meaningful.
